Calls for parity when it comes to disaster relief

Almost a year since an extreme weather event hit south Wexford and victims say that they have only received false promises from Government.

On November 2nd last year a tornado hit Clongeen and Foulksmills destroying a number of properties. The claims come as Flood-damaged businesses in Cork are set to receive funding of up to 100-thousand euro following damage caused by storm Babet. Wexford Councillor George Lawlor says he thinks there should be parity when it comes to dealing with such disasters: "I think there needs to be parity and I think people need to be treated equally when disaster strikes, and it certainly was a disaster when the tornado struck in Wexford last year. A once in a lifetime event that has to be recognised for what it was. In the same way that the devastation in Midleton was recognised over night." Councillor Lawlor is now calling on the Government to look again at the devastation that occurred in Wexford: "So I am calling on the Government to look again at the devastation caused by the tornado in Clongeen and recompense sufficiently so that people can rebuild their lives."
