Rank and file gardai have passed a motion asking to be allowed have beards while on duty.
The GRA conference heard arguments in favour of beards, such as for people who have skin conditions irritated by shaving, as well as for personal reasons. Garda John Joe O'Connell says police in Lubbock, Texas recently adopted new rules on beards.
