Just Two Additional Doctors Working In Wexford Since 2020

Figures from the HSE show there were 73 GMS doctors, or those who work with medical and GP Visit cards, working in the county in December of 2025 while a further 7 private GPs were also accounted for.

The same figures from 2020 show 77 GMS doctors with just one working privately as more doctors have moved away from the public system.

Overall, Wexford has seen the addition of just two GPs in 5 years despite the population growing by an estimated 15 thousand people.

In neighbouring counties, Wicklow has a reported 98 doctors despite having 10 thousand fewer people while Waterford has 83 GPs serving 40 thousand fewer people.

The figures were released by Sinn Fein Health Spokesperson and Waterford TD David Cullinane who says the GP system is under enormous pressure and we need to  value doctors more, support them better and give them more choice about how they build their careers.

5, 775 people have contacted the HSE this year because they couldn't secure a GP themselves.

Figures show the number of GPs in the country doesn't match the growing needs of the population, with the number of new GPs increasing by less than 200 between 2020 and 2025, compared with a population growth of over 480 thousand.

The HSE data also reveals the amount of GPs who took on private contracts was double the amount who took on public contracts between 2020 and 2025.

Sinn Fein says the numbers represent a 'crisis point' in GP access.
