People who assault someone because of their race or sexuality will be convicted of a hate crime, under new proposed legislation.
Currently such crimes are treated as a straight forward assault charge in court proceedings. The Justice Minister has declared that the existing legislation is not fit for purpose and says the new offence will have an enhanced penalty.
