New seanad to meet later
The 25th Seanad will meet for the first time today. But after electing a Cathaoirleach, the 'Upper House' of the Oireachtas will adjourn again for a week. It's already cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of euro in wages and expenses before holding a single sitting. But the 25th Seanad will finally meet today with the only item on the agenda - the election of a Cathaoirleach. Fianna Fáil's Denis O'Donovan is to secure that post after a deal was cut with Fine Gael, though Sinn Féin will also put forward a nominee. All eyes will be on Taoiseach Enda Kenny as to who he selects to be Fine Gael leader in the upper house - he's expected to give the nod to his Deputy Leader and former Minister, James Reilly.
