The HSE’s highly anticipated Winter Vaccination Programme for Wexford has officially begun this week, offering both flu and COVID-19 vaccines to a wide range of eligible groups. This programme aims to safeguard the health of those most at risk during the colder months. The flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available for free to those in high-risk categories, including people aged 60 years and older, those with underlying medical conditions and individuals with weakened immune systems. In addition to protecting adults, the programme also focuses on children, with the nasal spray flu vaccine available free of charge for all children aged 2 to 17 years through participating GPs, pharmacies and schools. Pregnant women are also encouraged to get the flu vaccine to reduce their risk of complications. RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) immunisation is also a key part of the winter programme. For babies born between March and August 2025, RSV immunisation clinics are available at local community sites until 12 October. This will help protect babies during their most vulnerable period, when they are at risk of serious RSV-related illness. Vaccines are available at participating GPs and pharmacies, and they can be given together or at different intervals. HSE vaccination teams will also visit residential care facilities and homebound patients to ensure everyone has access to these life-saving vaccines.
