New Financial Literacy Programme Helps Students Prepare for Their First Pay Packet

A new financial literacy programme is being piloted in schools to help students understand what to expect when they enter the workforce and receive their first pay packet.

“Lucy’s First Job” is the brainchild of accountant Frank Kelly, who developed the initiative to give young people practical knowledge about money as they prepare to take on their first jobs.

The programme focuses on the financial realities that come with starting work, helping students understand their earnings and the importance of managing their money from an early age.

Frank Kelly is currently working with a pilot school scheme, with the aim of giving students the confidence and knowledge to make informed financial decisions when they begin earning.

The initiative comes as many young people take on part-time or first jobs without necessarily having been taught the basics of managing their income, understanding deductions or planning their spending.

Speaking on Morning Mix, Frank Kelly explained the thinking behind Lucy’s First Job and why he believes financial education should begin before young people enter the workplace.

The programme aims to provide students with practical skills they can carry with them into their working lives, from understanding their first payslip to making sensible decisions about their money.
